Peter Lacey: Hello! Larry: Hi, Peter. Peter Lacey: My pajamas and I were getting a little worried! Darryl: Lol. Darryl: Well, go ahead and start asking Peter questions. Peter Lacey: Well, I suppose if people don't know too much about the music they may have some questions. Darryl: Lol. Darryl: Ok, for those of you who don't know, Peter has just completed his new album, “Through A Glass Brightly”. Larry: Yeah. Stacey: Ok, to tell you the truth, Peter, I really don’t know very much about your music. Peter Lacey: It's a well-kept secret for a lot of people!! Darryl: Lol. Darryl: I’m sure it’s great, Peter. Darryl: Is it available in the United States? Peter Lacey: Lol! Stacey: What kind of music is it? Larry: I have heard some of the clips and it’s really good. You have a cool website, Peter. Peter Lacey: At the present time it's available in the US through the Internet at “NOT LAME”, “FUSION”, “GROOVES”, and “AMAZON”. Marsha: Cool. Peter Lacey: Thanks, Larry! Peter Lacey: And, my music is getting lots of radio attention. Darryl: That’s cool; I will have to look for it. Larry: hey that’s really good, Peter. I’m glad you are getting out. Larry: What style is your music, Peter? Contemporary or Beach Boy-influenced? Darryl: That’s great that it’s getting radio! Peter Lacey: Interesting question…I suppose the simple answer is a little of both. "BEAM!" was more Beach Boys-style and "Glass" is too, but with new musical ideas, too! Peter Lacey: It’s important that things don’t stay the same. It’s good to mess with the formula. Darryl: Lol! Peter Lacey: Hehehe! Larry: Yeah, definitely. Peter Lacey: So many people get stuck. That’s something to avoid. Larry: I enjoy the music and their shows. Peter, are you going to see Brian when he comes over to England? Peter Lacey: Indeed! Larry: Yeah, I have seen 3 of Brian’s shows. You will enjoy them. Peter Lacey: Seeing the Beach Boys over the years - He was always absent so it's a miracle that he's playing and sadly the other great brothers gone. Larry: Yes, it was sad to lose them and George, who we just recently lost. Darryl: Oh, speaking of the Wilson brothers, today is Denny’s birthday! Peter Lacey: I’m speechless. Dear George Larry: Happy birthday, Denny! Larry: Yes, it was sad to hear about George. Peter Lacey: But, it’s a legacy of positive music. Darryl: Yes, George was a hard loss. Larry: Who besides Brian has been a big influence on your music and did you ever meet George Harrison? Peter Lacey: The Beatles, Motown, and Debussy. Steve: Debussy is cool. Steve: Do you study the Debussy scores, Peter? Steve: Or just listen to the records? Peter Lacey: But Brian is a towering influence on so many musicians! Steve: Yes he is, Peter. Larry: Yes, he is. What about Buddy Holly? Did he have a lot of influence in England? Stacey: I've always admired Brian. Peter Lacey: I can play some piano pieces, but my interest is academic. Steve: Well, the reason I mentioned it, Peter, is there is a bit different style between “La Mer” and “The Faun” scores. Peter Lacey: Yes, indeed! “La Mer” was partly written in Eastbourne , which is nearby. Steve: Where are you, Peter, geographically speaking? Peter Lacey: Sussex, England. Peter Lacey: McCartney country!! Steve: What do you think of "Please Let Me Wonder", Peter? Steve: Hey, Peter: I dig the saxes and vibes at the end of "Please Let Me Wonder". Peter Lacey: Absolutely! Jeff: Peter, I think “Beam” is a great album. Peter Lacey: I'm recording album 3, so late night is the right time and it’s the right time for me! Peter Lacey: Here is my website: http://www.crosswinds.com/~peterlacey Darryl: Thanks for the site, Peter. Peter Lacey: And http://www.pinkhedgehog.com is the website of the record company. Peter Lacey: “Beam” was recorded on a shoestring, but “Through A Glass Brightly” was different so as there was time and better recording facilities. Steve: Where might those facilities have been, Peter? Peter Lacey: We invested the sales in improving the studio, which is up in my loft. Larry: so Peter do you think you get to the States sometime Jeff: How many tracks do you use in your loft? Peter Lacey: Mine is in World's end believe it or not! Steve: That works! Peter Lacey: 4 tracks. Peter Lacey: On principal. Steve: Wow, you're really going back to the early days. Cool. Jeff: You get a great sound with only 4 tracks Peter, just like Brian Wilson did. Peter Lacey: With so many great records made on 4 why bother with 48? Steve: It makes one be judicious, that's for sure. Larry: Sometimes simple is better. Steve: About what goes where. Peter Lacey: Quite.... Jeff: I reckon anymore than 8 tracks is over-production. Peter Lacey: I use a Studer now. Steve: Is that a tape recorder? Jeff: Sometimes less is more, aye Peter? Peter Lacey: Sometimes! Peter Lacey: It's an open reel 4 track, the same used for recording McCartney. Steve: Is that a quarter inch, Peter? Peter Lacey: Yes. Steve: I see. Steve: What speed? Larry: Cool and where can you get one? Steve: 15? Peter Lacey: I've had this since 1973. It runs at 15 ips/30ips, I'm not sure they are available easily! Peter Lacey: But everything is digitally mastered! Peter Lacey: Boo! Steve: Well, one cool thing is you can play old mono or stereo mix downs. Larry: Yeah Peter it seems like some things been lost with the entire modern recording equipment look at all the great records done in the past. Steve: If you can find those tapes. Darryl: You don’t like digital, Peter? Peter Lacey: Gosh yes, as I say. I have worked in many posh studios but the 4-track process is a great challenge and a great pleasure. Jeff: Can't beat those bounces for recording fun. Steve: Do you try to get "string" sounds out of a synthesizer? Larry: Carol Kaye said recently that you could wind up over producing the music. Peter Lacey: Digital is very helpful at the mastering stage because it helps to retain fidelity of 4-track analogue. Peter Lacey: Yes! That the greediness of too many tracks to choose from! Peter Lacey: In the "old days" if you over-produced four tracks you made a mess aurally. Now it's possible to make a nice mess. Jeff: Good quote, Peter. Peter Lacey: Ta! Steve: Peter, do you drive old cars, or are you a modern man that way? Peter Lacey: I have a modern car and an old car. Steve: I think that’s probably the best setup. Steve: What’s the “oldie”? Larry: Yeah Peter if you get time Brian’s July concert can be watched at the House of Blues website Peter Lacey: The old car is for Sundays, for Sunday driving trough the Sussex countryside. Steve: Ever see any old Zephyr Zodiac's over there? Ringo Starr had one in the early days. Peter Lacey: A "Hillman Minx". Steve: Ahh! Larry: Cool Peter Lacey: It was my Dad's. Steve: Nice. Peter Lacey: Corny but cool. Steve: Yeah. Steve: Just like my old Corvair. Steve: Corny but cool. Peter Lacey: Like my music. Steve: Ha ha ha! Darryl: Ha! Peter Lacey: Has to be said! Steve: Sure! Peter Lacey: Brian was cool but. Steve: A bit neanderthal? Steve: Yeah, at times. Peter Lacey: Cool. Peter Lacey: how do you mean. He's not Debussy? those augmented dominant 7ths were part of that syndrome nope, he's mozart harking back Peter Lacey: indeed, big time! like that dominant -augmented 7th before the opening vocal of warmth of the sun steveo_1965> i think he got that from murray Brian was far from neanderthal! hehehehe at times he was And Murray got it from Debussy (not personally) but also very modern has anyone here got Peter's Beam CD ? well im sure brian got it from murray yeah hushed silence...... no i dont have peter's bea m cd shame on me) dont. but im going to check it out! wonder if i'll find any dominant augmented 7th's? Check out the new one, I prefer it myself! i have beam and will add the new one in fact a precise count finds 126900 hehehehehe you should all go out and buy beam, it's great it's the suspendeded 4th's that are plentyful too! do they resolve? then buy the new one too traditionally yes, but me, no. thats what i meant It's the old "Debussy" trick! sorry Jeff, i just got what you meant you ARE a fan of debussy!
