***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BEGINNING PART OF THIS TRANSCRIPT WAS LOST AND CANNOT BE RECOVERED*** Al_e_Cat: Yes, he was a wonderful songwriter! Outie315: Shot In The Dark? Carol Kaye: I don't know if I did Elephant Walk or not, don't think so somehow...I worked for Hank about mid 60s on to about 1973. Carol Kaye: Great songwriter, wonderful man. So humorous on the dates, we'd be giggling so much we'd have to take a break. Carol Kaye: No, not Shot In The Dark but one movie, with Emily, that tune in it. And several big records. Love Story, etc. Outie315: Did you Know Bob Keane from Del Fi? Carol Kaye: Hank would play solo piano the first part of the recording and sometimes go into another Standard tune and there we'd be with egg on our face with the arrangement and he'd realize what he did and would giggle, we'd giggle, and it's all over, hahaha. Carol Kaye: Yes, I worked a lot for Bob Keene (he changed the spelling of his name), guitar on the Ritchie Valens things other dates etc. Al_e_Cat: Cool! Marsha: Oh wow! Darryl: Did you ever work on the Friends or 20/20 albums? Outie315: Wow thats a label!!! Al_e_Cat: It sure is! Carol Kaye: Friends? No not 20/20...I stopped doing a lot of recording mid 70s. Carol Kaye: I see...was going to answer a question I saw up there. Oh well Al_e_Cat: Carol, how are your kitties? Carol Kaye: I didn't want to be in the recording scene, I had a good name in jazz in the 50s, but recording for Sam Cooke and then Ritchie was so nice...and they were nice and great talents, I decided to aim for studio work, besides wanted to make the good money for my mom and kids I had to take care of then. Outie315: Wouldn't It Be Nice Polka??? Carol Kaye: Oh, thanks for asking all 4 kitties are doing great. My big calico stopped swatting the new young kitty. She was so funny; she'd catch the younger (spoiled) kitty and all of a sudden, run up to swat her good then run away. Hahaha...in real life, wouldn't it be great to run up and swat someone and run like hell? Carol Kaye: Wouldn't It Be Nice Polka? Hahaha. Larry: Yes there are a few. I would like to do that, too. Carol Kaye: Amen. Al_e_Cat: Me too. Carol Kaye: I love kitties...they clean themselves, you don't have to walk them, but I do miss having a dog too. Outie315: Dear Mrs. Bass Man, do you travel? Carol Kaye: I traveled in the 1950s with a large orchestra, was married to the bass player so it was fun then, was 19 and 20 years old, saw the whole USA. Outie315: Do you travel these days? Carol Kaye: No, at 66, I don't like to travel anymore...I did a lot of traveling last year, opened up the EMP music museum in Seattle playing there with a jazz trio etc. but don't like to play live, it's not worth it. Studio work is easy and fun yet. Outie315: Do you do lectures? Outie315: Do you Remember Banana & Louie? Carol Kaye: I did a lot of seminars over the years, and especially did seminars last year, but nothing this year, just trying to get the book done, and just do studio work, staying home a lot. Carol Kaye: No, don't know Banana and Louie.who are they? Outie315: Dogs!!!! Carol Kaye: I have to say I only listen to classical and jazz music so don't know much about the music scene lately. And in fact most of our group doesn't play music at all. Burned out from recording it so much I think. Al_e_Cat: They were Brian & Marilyn's dogs! Carol Kaye: Oh ok, I get it. Carol Kaye: I thought it was some new group. Outie315: Why do you suppose Brian put the Train Track on Pet Sounds? Al_e_Cat: Brian recorded them on Pet Sounds. Carol Kaye: I dont know. Carol Kaye: Well, I need to be going now. We can do this again sometime. Larry: Yes! Darryl: Thank you very much for the offer, Carol! Darryl: Maybe soon Larry: Thank you for your offer, Carol! Outie315: Dear Carol: Thanks for being so honest and nice!!! Carol Kaye: Sure, any time...I'm here. Marsha: This was very interesting for me! Outie315: Carol Kaye you rule! Love your licks! Carol Kaye: Studio musicians in general are good people, family people - the business of music can be a little tricky but it's good to be in the "background". Al_e_Cat: Yeah. Definitely. Marsha: What an interesting life you have led! Carol Kaye: Hahaha, thanks (licks). Helps to play with good drummers! Larry: Very true Al_e_Cat: It sure does! Larry: Yes you played with some great musicians and I am looking forward to your book. Darryl: Me too! Carol Kaye: My 3 kids all now realize the stuff we cut back then, was history but at the time we were all just trying to make a living keeping a business going, playing hard, inventing licks, phrases etc. to make singers sound good etc., it was interesting though busy. Outie315: Carol Kaye rules! God bless! Carol Kaye: Thanks! Darryl: Yes, you are a great person, Carol. Outie315: Thanks for being Honest & Sincere!!! Larry: I always enjoy being at Carols chats. Al_e_Cat: I have to make a phone call. Carol, it was nice to talk to you again! Carol Kaye: I really almost quit the studio work to go on the road with George Shearing in 1962 though but just couldn't leave my kids and shortly after that I liked playing bass better than guitar in the studios (I missed the bebop jazz I had made a name for in the 50s) and so the bass ruled, and that was fun. Carol Kaye: AleCat, nice to see you too, take care, thank-you. Carol Kaye: Well, I guess it is time to go...we'll do this again, thanks everyone. It was nice tonight. Darryl: Thank you so much Carol, it's been great! Al_e_Cat: Bye Carol, and thanks again! Marsha: This has been the most interesting chat Ive been to! Thank you! Darryl: We will definitely invite you back! Larry: Me, too! Al_e_Cat: Bye everyone else, bye Larry & Darryl. Darryl: Bye! Outie315: Bye from Outie! Marsha: Bye Carol! Bye everyone! Larry: Bye everyone! Darryl: Bye! Thanks for coming!
